The meta tags that actually matter for SEO

Meta tags are small pieces of HTML with outsized effects on how a page is found, shared and clicked. A working checklist beats folklore.

Title and description

The title is still a ranking signal and your headline in search results; aim for specific, front-loaded wording and avoid truncation. The meta description does not rank, but it is your sales pitch — a concrete promise earns more clicks than a keyword list.

Canonical and robots

Duplicate URLs (with query strings, http/https variants, print views) split signals; a canonical link tells search engines which one counts. The robots meta controls indexing per page — noindex is the honest way to keep thin pages out.

Social cards

Open Graph (og:title, og:image…) and Twitter Card tags decide what your link looks like when shared. A page with a good title and a 1200×630 image gets dramatically more clicks in messengers.

Hreflang for multilingual sites

Serving the same content in 11 languages without hreflang invites duplicate-content confusion; the tag set connects each language version to its siblings, plus x-default.
